In Britain, we call them 'trainers'  as their primary use is for sport and training. Diversely, Americans call them 'sneakers'  because they're soft-soled, perfect for sneaking around in! Whatever you decide to call them, they have been the symbol of athleticism and over time we have noticed that their function has transcended into fashion items of desire. From sportswear, streetstyle and the catwalk; trainers have become a statement of commodity! The first ever pair of sports shoes were created by The Liverpool Rubber Company, founded by John Boyd Dunlop in the 1830's. Dunlop was an innovator and discovered how to bond canvas uppers to rubber soles. With the increasing enthusiasm for sporting activities, like tennis, a specialist style was needed. So, in 1929 Dunlop produced the iconic 'Green Flash' trainer, worn by Fred Perry at Wimbledon.

As years went on, the trainers' function evolved from sporting needs to fashion, or something that can do both. In the 1950's, trainers were worn with jeans because they were easy to walk around in and were super comfortable. In this particular era, trainers represented rebellion and a willingness to stray from the restrictions in their society.

Aside from being popular on the court, trainers were (and still are) heavily seen on the streets. Trainers are the backbone of streetstyle fashion, as they were a strong staple for the hip-hop and rap scene; as seen on LL Cool J and Run-DMC. Trainers speak to all communities and participate in so many fields, from culture, music, art and sports.

As we all know, comfort is key! As time has progressed, wearing trainers to the workplace is becoming less of a controversy. The British etiquette experts 'Debrett's'  have approved of them being worn to smart-casual occasions and state it's 'socially acceptable.'  Why wouldn't they be? And not only this, but the rise of the athleisure trend, resurfaced from lockdown where comfort was prioritised, which impacted the spurt of trainer sales.

When it comes to everyday fashion, trainers are everything! They are undoubtedly value for their money if you think about how many times they will be worn throughout the year. They are durable and are a modern footwear choice to pair with your outfits. Trainers are a powerful indicator of individuality, so whether you want them simple, decorative, high-top or chunky; we have something for you!
