Shrimps, Take All Our Royalties!
Back in February, everybody fell in love with what Hannah Weiland created for the runway of her AW20 collection. All of the signature Shrimps styles of faux fur, beaded accessories, ruffles and floral embellishments made their seasonal appearance but this time, she turned to Queen Elizabeth and Jane Austen for inspiration.
Shrimps came onto the fashion scene in 2013 when founder - Hannah Weiland, who was nicknamed Shrimps throughout her childhood - played around with a sample of premium faux fur whilst studying at London College of Fashion. Seven years on and she now has a massive cult following of fellow fashionistas who love all things frilly, feminine and faux fur, of course. The label has evolved from when she first began and now Weiland, along with her her London based team, design full ready-to-wear collections offering fun knitwear, pretty dresses, soft tailoring and quirky accessories.
Like Shrimps, many brands and big designers have stopped using real fur in their collections, and with the faux fur quality constantly developing, we can expect to see a lot more designers follow suit. Queen Elizabeth even came to the decision to stop wearing fur back in 2019 which is probably why she quickly became the centre muse for the latest Shrimps Autumn/ Winter collection. It seems the royals and Shrimps go hand in hand, as The Crown star and actress, Helena Bonham Carter, is featured on the brands Instagram feed showing off a pearl handbag, so with this extra sense of regality to the new collection, I'm sure she will be spotted again wearing the latest accessories they now have on offer.
It's obvious that patriotism is on Weiland's mind as her Pre collection looked to the literary work of Jane Austen, featuring prints of novel-like drawings of the old English countryside amongst oversized collared knits, tartan coats trimmed with faux fur and apron-style dresses all bejewelled with pearl and diamante finishes.
